Easter Weekend

It must be the end of Easter as I am writing my blog with the smell of a Sunday roast coming from the kitchen (on a Monday). Its been a really great week, I was lucky enough to go to a Red R function in the week which reminded me why I am doing this and amazed me how much people do for other people who are worse off. Training has gone well, I am actually enjoying the interval training and had two good rides over the weekend finishing with 42 miles on Sunday. It was the first time I have been out without 5 layers of clothing, what a difference that makes. The only downside was dealing with my new nemesis, a hill called Belmont Hill, which means nothing to anybody outside Wales but its the route from Caerleon to the Celtic Manor and is just one steep hill that is beating me at present. However 3 months ago nobody would have convinced me I would feel comfortable on a bike for 3 hours so this hill will be beaten or I will have to find a new way home!

Guest Blog from Rob Penn who writes like an angel on wheels!

I ride a bicycle for many reasons. Perhaps the most powerful reason at this stage of my life is to share the physical and emotional fellowship of riding with friends. Happily, all my best friends ride. I’m not saying that we can’t be friends if you don’t ride – that would be absurd – nor am I suggesting that I’m friends with everyone I’ve ever ridden with. It’s just that all my best friends do ride. That’s the way things have turned out. For more ….. http://blog.bikecation.co.uk/blog/bid/173456/L-Etape-du-Tour-Over-the-hills-and-far-awayRob Penn

Back on the saddle

My 47th birthday was last weekend and to be honest I had been feeling sorry for myself, not about being 47 but finding the training hard and worrying too much about the end goal and not the steps to getting there.
Maybe having a surprise visit from my kids helped (thank you by the way) but they put things into perspective and the training has gone much better this week. I even managed to get two hours in on the turbo bike whilst watching the football. The best thing about being out on the road this week was getting to understand how to climb, its partly in the mind but also how you attack it. At least I have stopped seeing my whole life flash before me the moment a hill appears, its only my childhood that flashes by now!turbo trainer
